Suffering its first loss of the season on five days prior, the nation’s top ranked team, Findlay Prep, came right back with victory in a nail biting rivalry match over Bishop Gorman.
With 1.1 seconds to play and Findlay leading 50-49, Gorman, ranked 47th in the DigitalSports National Basketball Rankings, had the ball under the net on an inbound play. The Gaels got the ball to 7-foot tall Stephen Zimmerman who temporarily shook off Horace Spencer.
In the nick of time, Spencer recovered and blocked Zimmerman as the center went up for a layup, maintaining Findlay’s lead and putting the Pilots back in the win column.
Findlay got off to a sluggish start, shooting 1 for 11 from the floor. Then, the Pilots finally started to get things going. By the half, they had an edge over the Gaels, lead 24-21.
Gorman led at times in the third and fourth quarters, but Findlay was always there to take the advantage right back. Following a Allonzo Trier 3-pointer, the Pilots took a 42-40 lead, and would never trail again.
Trier finished with a game-high 26 points. Spencer finished with eight points, nine rebounds, and two blocks.
Now back on track, Findlay advances to 18-1 on the year. The Pilots square off against Canyon Springs on February 2.
